The Language Factory & Interpreting

The Language Factory can provide interpreters for a variety of business situations from market research focus groups to business meetings or large conferences. Contact us to discuss your requirements. Interpreting sessions are usually charged on a daily basis and need to be booked as far in advance as possible as our interpreters are in great demand. We can book interpreters for ad hoc, consecutive or simultaneous sessions. Please call us with details of the requirements for your meeting and to discuss which form of interpreting would be the most appropriate for your event.

What are the different forms of interpreting?

Ad-hoc, consecutive and simultaneous are the three main forms of interpreting and are used in different business situations.

Ad hoc

Ad hoc interpreting is suitable for small business meetings or informal gatherings where only a few people require an interpreter. This could involve situations such as small business negotiations, factory visits or to help with staffing a trade exhibition at home or abroad. If only one or two people require interpretation this can also be carried out in the form of whispering interpreting.

Consecutive

Consecutive interpreting is used in more formal meetings involving a larger number of participants. This is a slower method of interpreting as the interpretation is delivered consecutively at suitable intervals for the speaker. The interpreter normally takes notes and delivers the contents of the speech at 15-20 minute intervals.

Simultaneous

Simultaneous interpreting (also known as conference interpreting) is used at large multinational meetings. The proceedings are interpreted simultaneously with only a 2-3 second delay. The interpreters work in teams of two or three and sit in sound-proofed booths. The interpreters do not work for more than 30 minutes at a time due to the high levels of concentration required. They speak into a microphone and the delegates listen to the interpreters through headsets.

Focus group interpreting

Focus group interpreting is a version of simultaneous interpreting. A market research focus group typically consists of a group of respondents and a moderator. The respondents will be asked to discuss a particular topic or product. The interpreter or, as is usually the case, interpreters will view the group from an adjacent room through a two-way mirror. The will interpret between the respondents' language and the client's own language. As respondents often interrupt or talk over each other, the interpreter will usually provide the gist of the discussion rather than a word-for-word translation.

The Language Factory can provide interpreters for all four types of interpreting assignment. If you are interested in learning more or receiving a bespoke costing for your event, please contact us today for a free, no-obligations quote. Simply call us on +44 (0)1727 862722 or drop us an e-mail.
